Extreme heat and raging bushfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

Widespread Extreme Heat Warnings Across Multiple States

These conditions follow recent fires in another state, which caused the destruction of homes and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been issued for the coming days in areas within SA and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure shifts to the east, delivering blazing sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures presents a dangerous situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a major city was left in blackout recently after powerful winds compromised the city’s power grid, with toppled trees bringing down power lines. The weather conditions also led to major travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial impact on electrical infrastructure is anticipated to cause further issues as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Fog Covers Sunny Area

At the same time, a valley known for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has experienced one of its grayest and most overcast periods on record. A particular form of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by unprecedented fall precipitation that left soils saturated.

Storm Brings Wintry Weather to Holiday Destination

Turning to another country, a weather system has ushered in heavy rain, powerful winds and even snow to a group of islands – conditions many would not connect with this favored tourist spot. While snow is not unknown at elevated areas, the storm brought some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a national park, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snow, fierce northerly winds buffeted the island chain, with gusts exceeding 50mph observed on several locations. The influence of the storm is forecast to diminish this week with more seasonal conditions returning.
