UN Removes Penalties on President of Syria Before White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to a US resolution removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his presidential meeting next week.
He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that drove out the former president in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.
America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to global penalties while commanding the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the extremist organization. America delisted HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations during July.
More Penalties Removed
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and allied countries for their support the country and its population."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday comes after American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened for the first time during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to Arab nations.
Following that encounter, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting will not be the president's debut journey to the US during this period. In September, he became the first Syrian leader to speak before the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status across international circles" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
