Trump's Proposed Examinations Do Not Involve Nuclear Explosions, US Energy Secretary Says
The America has no plans to perform nuclear explosions, Energy Secretary Chris Wright has announced, easing international worries after President Trump directed the defense establishment to resume weapons testing.
"These do not constitute nuclear explosions," Wright told Fox News on Sunday. "These are what we call non-critical detonations."
The comments come days after Trump wrote on his social media platform that he had instructed military leaders to "commence testing our atomic weapons on an equal basis" with adversarial countries.
But Wright, whose organization oversees examinations, said that people living in the Nevada desert should have "no worries" about seeing a nuclear cloud.
"Americans near previous experiment locations such as the Nevada National Security Site have no cause for concern," Wright stated. "This involves testing all the other parts of a nuclear weapon to ensure they achieve the proper formation, and they prepare the nuclear explosion."
International Responses and Denials
Trump's remarks on Truth Social last week were interpreted by many as a sign the America was making plans to resume complete nuclear detonations for the first occasion since over three decades ago.
In an conversation with a news program on CBS, which was taped on Friday and shown on Sunday, Trump reiterated his position.
"I am stating that we're going to perform atomic experiments like various states do, absolutely," Trump responded when questioned by a journalist if he aimed for the United States to set off a nuclear weapon for the first time in several decades.
"Russian experiments, and China's testing, but they don't talk about it," he continued.
The Russian Federation and The People's Republic of China have not carried out similar examinations since the year 1990 and 1996 respectively.
Pressed further on the topic, Trump remarked: "They avoid and inform you."
"I prefer not to be the sole nation that avoids testing," he said, mentioning Pyongyang and Islamabad to the list of countries supposedly testing their weapon stocks.
On the start of the week, China's foreign ministry denied carrying out nuclear examinations.
As a "dependable nuclear nation, Beijing has continuously... upheld a defensive atomic policy and abided by its pledge to suspend atomic experiments," official spokesperson Mao stated at a routine media briefing in the capital.
She noted that China hoped the America would "implement specific measures to secure the global atomic reduction and non-dissemination framework and maintain worldwide equilibrium and stability."
On later in the week, Moscow too rejected it had conducted nuclear tests.
"Regarding the experiments of Poseidon and Burevestnik, we hope that the details was conveyed properly to the President," Moscow's representative told the press, referencing the titles of Russian weapons. "This should not in any way be seen as a nuclear test."

North Korea is the exclusive state that has conducted nuclear examinations since the the last decade of the 20th century - and even the regime declared a suspension in 2018.
