'The last stretch proved absolutely grueling': UK pair complete extraordinary journey in Down Under after paddling across Pacific Ocean

One more day. One more session navigating the pitiless slide. Another round of raw palms gripping unforgiving oars.

But after more than 8,000 nautical miles across the ocean – an epic five-and-a-half-month journey through Pacific waters that included intimate meetings with marine giants, defective signaling devices and sweet treat crises – the waters delivered a last obstacle.

Strong 20-knot breezes off Cairns repeatedly forced their tiny rowboat, their rowing boat Velocity, away from solid ground that was now painfully near.

Loved ones gathered on land as an expected noon touchdown became 2pm, followed by 4pm, then twilight hours. Ultimately, at 6:42 PM, they arrived at Cairns Yacht Club.

"Those last hours tested every fiber," Rowe said, at last on firm earth.

"The wind was pushing us off the channel, and we genuinely believed we might fail. We drifted outside the navigational path and contemplated a final swim to land. To finally be here, after talking about it for so long, proves truly extraordinary."

The Epic Journey Begins

The English women – Rowe is 28 and Payne 25 – pushed off from Lima, Peru in early May (an initial attempt in April was halted by steering issues).

During 165 ocean days, they maintained 50 nautical miles daily, paddling together in daylight, individual night shifts while her partner rested minimal sleep in a tight compartment.

Survival and Challenges

Sustained by 400 kilograms of dehydrated meals, a saltwater conversion device and a vessel-based sprout cultivation system, the duo depended upon a less-than-reliable solar system for a fraction of the power they've needed.

For much of their journey over the enormous Pacific, they operated without navigation tools or location transmitters, turning them into a "ghost ship", hardly noticeable to maritime traffic.

The women endured 30-foot swells, navigated shipping lanes and survived violent tempests that, periodically, shut down every electronic device.

Record-Breaking Achievement

And they've kept rowing, each pull following the last, during intensely warm periods, under star-filled night skies.

They have set a new record as the first all-female pair to row across the South Pacific Ocean, without breaks or external assistance.

And they have raised more than £86,000 (A$179,000) supporting Outward Bound.

Life Aboard

The pair did their best to maintain communication with civilization away from their compact craft.

On "day 140-something", they declared a "cocoa crisis" – reduced to their final two portions with over 1,000 miles remaining – but permitted themselves the luxury of unwrapping a portion to honor England's rugby team winning the Rugby World Cup.

Personal Reflections

Payne, originating from Yorkshire's non-coastal region, lacked ocean experience prior to her independent Atlantic journey during 2022 establishing a record.

Another ocean now falls to her accomplishments. Yet there were periods, she acknowledged, when failure seemed possible. As early as day six, a path over the planet's biggest sea seemed unachievable.

"Our power was dropping, the freshwater system lines broke, however following multiple fixes, we accomplished a workaround and just limped along with little power throughout the remaining journey. Each time problems occurred, we merely made eye contact and went, 'typically it occurred!' Yet we continued forward."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. Our mutual dedication stood out, we problem-solved together, and we perpetually pursued common aims," she said.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Prior to her Pacific success, she paddled the Atlantic, trekked England's coastal trail, climbed Mount Kenya and cycled across Spain. Additional challenges probably remain.

"We shared such wonderful experiences, and we're eagerly anticipating future expeditions together as well. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
