As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
