Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a return to football management, noting that it would be challenging to match the unique sense of purpose he experienced as the national team coach.

Southgate suggested his intention to channel his attention toward working with the youth and addressing what he called a pervasive negative narrative presently found in the country.

Embracing Different Paths Beyond The Sport

Speaking on air, he was prompted regarding talk linking him with available jobs in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the launch of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, the author shared that he is deeply committed about providing role models for the youth, drawing on experiences from his period as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He believes that his time managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds broader applications.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Influencing Youth

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He continued: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

He stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often centers on disagreement.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His forthcoming book, the book Dear England, is set to provide further insights on guidance and public spirit inspired by his distinguished time in football.
