Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—an event that may just hold the means to overcome him for good.

Spoiler Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the concluding episodes.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the truth about the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the endgame conflict to come.
