Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
