Rob Edwards along with Gary O'Neil represent the initial candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the team's 10-match without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous links to the club - are among the names to be considered by the club ownership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the club board as they begin the process of hiring a fresh manager.
Gary O'Neil is additionally emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning Wolves would not need to provide any buyout fee.
