Narrowboat Stranded on Waterway Hole Brink Successfully Hauled to Security

A canal boat perilously situated near a large hole in a waterway.
The vessel remained on the very brink of plunging into the massive hole.

A narrowboat that was found balancing on the brink of a giant collapse after a section of waterway in a rural area collapsed has been pulled to safety.

A Harrowing Escape and a Specialist Operation

The owner's boat, named Pacemaker, was perilously close from falling into the opening on the canal in Whitchurch, which formed on Monday following an bank collapse.

Mr Stowe, hailing from Solihull, escaped barefoot with his immediate family at around 4:10 in the morning after he was awakened and heard a powerful flow of tremendous force.

The council stated the boat, which the family live on, was rescued at approximately late Tuesday evening using a specialized recovery mission.

"Once in location, the recovery system was able to haul the boat along the empty canal clear of the breach hole," a statement reported.

"The vessel is currently safely located next to the nearby bridge," officials stated, noting that it would be floated again in the coming months, when a dam would be built beyond the boat.

The Situation Begin to Recover

During the night, water was directed into blocked-off areas established by the trust on Tuesday, and as of dawn on Wednesday, the water table were recovering.

"This means that, one of the boats in the vicinity of the breach site, along with six farther along the canal, are now commencing rise with the water," officials said.

"They are expected to be fully afloat by the end of the day."

Family's Possessions Still Aboard

The boat owner previously stated that all of his and his family's possessions were on the boat, and that they had escaped with only the garments they were wearing.

He explained they had no phones or bank cards, and mentioned his birthday was on Christmas Day.

"I'm not sure I'll ever moor in this region again, I'm not sure I'll ever moor on an raised bank again," he commented.
"To tell the truth, it's very debatable [that] I'll ever wish to go on a boat again."
Paul Stowe stated he and his loved ones escaped with minimal possessions.
He explained he and his household only had the clothes on their backs, and their family pets.

Investigation Underway as Repairs Will Be Costly

The council noted that investigations had begun into what caused the collapse.

"This will continue after the new year concurrent with the early stages to retrieve the craft in the breach hole and the lengthy and expensive task of reconstructing and reopening the canal."

"Now the first phase of the rescue, encompassing the concern for the safety of those on board, has ended, our staff have been laboring diligently to replenish the canal around the location of the collapse," remarked a spokesperson for the waterway trust.

"This will mean, the narrowboats in the vicinity are becoming buoyant, and boat travel along other affected areas will be restored."

He noted the organization would be offering frequent progress reports and assurance to the area residents and maritime enthusiasts in the weeks ahead.

"Thankfully, collapses of this size are uncommon, but, when they take place, they're dear and difficult to rectify," he observed.

The body had earlier suggested that the fix could take several months.
