McLaren Blames Rival Drivers for Piastri-Norris Collision
A racing wheel flies off the McLaren of Norris after he made contact with team-mate Piastri at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.
McLaren Formula 1 leaders Brown and Stella attributed rival drivers for the collision between Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
The Australian driver, leading Norris in the standings by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after hitting the Nico Hulkenberg.
The crash eliminated both McLaren drivers out of the event, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.
McLaren Leaders Voice Frustration Over Incident
Brown, the team's chief executive officer, told broadcasters that some of the racing at the front was "unprofessional", stating: "Obviously Hulkenberg made contact with Piastri and he had no business being where he was."
McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella added: "The reaction is that we are displeased that we didn't have the chance to race."
"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of expertise don't act with justful prudence. Enter the initial turn, make sure you avoid harming other drivers and continue."
McLaren clarified that Stella was referring to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.
Differing Perspectives on the Crash
However, 1996 world champion Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought the Australian had not demonstrated enough awareness of the dangers of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to pass Norris.
The Australian had a stronger launch than the Briton and at first challenged on the outside on the uphill approach to the turn.
But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on Norris on the way out, only to make contact with the Sauber driver.
Racer Comments After the Collision
The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Norris. A shame."
Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back things happened and I just was unfortunate and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."
The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."
Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."
"Piastri turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and exit of the first corner but I cannot vanish."
"I had Alonso attack on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Piastri turned in and the contact was unavoidable."
Aftermath and Team Response
McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but not until the event weekend. Both cars needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on Saturday.
The team principal said: "Overall displeased but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on repairing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the event from there."
"Our team holds a strong position from our performance point of view so I hope we have the possibility to race, race normally and utilize our capabilities."
"The points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A little more prudence would be beneficial for all involved."
Standings Impact
The race was taken by the Max Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 adrift of the Briton.
The team boss said: "The implication is what the numbers show - we lost eight points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive vehicle and two skilled drivers. We anticipate just some normal racing."
Verstappen said he was taking the title race one event at a time.
