Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
