Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Violent incident at educational facility
Learning centers in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, according to a statement.

One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Community members informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with schools suffering the most of the violence.
