No major competition markets equal footing in the manner of the NFL: it defines their identity. But through the first ten matchups during the current schedule, this is not a competition with perfect equilibrium among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Rather, we see a situation where the majority of teams appear to be sufficient.

Clear Picture in NFC

Within the National Football Conference, to some degree, we see clearer definition. Los Angeles and Seattle (each holding 7-2 records) look like the most balanced franchises in the NFL, and delivered overwhelming triumphs on Sunday. The 6-2 Eagles despite their struggles maintain one of the most talented rosters across the NFL, comparable to the Packers (5-2-1). Even the Lions (6-3 standing), with their fluctuating form along both lines of scrimmage and have been dealing with tension on their coaching staff, have shown they can hammer quality opponents. For each of these squads, one can readily construct a Super Bowl path.

AFC Playoff Chaos

Turning to the American Football Conference, championship race is a jumbled mess. The four teams leading their divisions after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) and Steelers (five wins, four losses). Read that again. Kansas City isn't there. Not the Bills. Not the Ravens or Bengals. Historically strong franchises, featuring the league’s best quarterbacks, have either obvious team deficiencies or are dealing with health issues.

Competitive Balance System

To some extent, this is exactly what the league wants. But watching the current division frontrunners in the AFC still feels strange. Areas of each team meet championship standards, though not comprehensively. Team Breakdowns

Indianapolis Outlook

Starting in Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't yet achieved total collapse. However, recent performances have caused alarm. He has returned to turning over the ball and struggling against pressure. He took seven sacks versus Atlanta during Sunday's contest, and had a brief period in which he threw a pick and coughed up the ball thrice. This follows he committed turnovers five separate times facing the Steelers.

The Colts’ offense thrived early in the season since Jones evaded the disaster plays. The running back and protection unit ensure Indianapolis remains capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, like their German performance. However, if Jones reverts to his previous error-filled form would end championship hopes.

New England Patriots

The Patriots seem somewhat similar. A year ago, they were league laughingstocks. Now, they’re football's most unexpected success and the hottest team in the NFL post seven wins in a row. If not for fumbling away a manageable matchup against Pittsburgh, they'd possess a 9-1 record with the top standing. Last season, they appeared aged and sluggish. Now they’re young, fast and unafraid. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They have faced the least challenging lineup across the NFL, and flaws have still emerged. Drake Maye has been brought down 35 times – the second-most in football – with several hits he endured during the game were vicious. As the season progresses, those hits add up.

Denver Broncos

Denver stands at also 8-2, yet it seems that they're barely surviving. The Denver signal-caller has been erratic, and the offensive unit laboring, with the defense doing the majority of the work. Lacking competent QB performance, the Broncos won't frighten anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also contending within their division holding a 7-2 record, but the injuries within their blocking corps will create difficulties to mount a deep postseason tilt.

Steelers Examination

Then we have the Steelers, inexplicably frontrunning their division despite being thumped 25-10 by the Chargers during prime time. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense regularly vanishes, with their quarterback's restrictions during his career phase continue to show up. They’re 5–4 and holding on, however, the Ravens, with their QB returning to health and the schedule softening, are on a three-game win streak. We shouldn't be completely astonished that Baltimore has closed within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record and still look like capable of division victory speaks volumes regarding the entire AFC.

Established Contenders

Baltimore constitutes part of the Big Three – together with Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, that would continue to generate the greatest concern for opponents if they qualified. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, but the Chiefs and Bills persistently undermine themselves.

Buffalo Bills

Previously, the Bills were riding high following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered one of the most disappointing losses this year. They didn't merely fall to the Dolphins; they suffered humiliation, losing 30-13 as visitors. The Dolphins secured their first triumph over the Bills in more than 1,000 days.
