Previous FBI head James the former director has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's legal representative submitted the plea on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was formally accused shortly after the former president pressured his attorney general to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative informed the magistrate they aimed to file several motions to throw out the legal matter before a court case, stating the legal action was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly designated to take over the proceedings.

James Comey's legal matter was originally managed by the original attorney, who left his position under pressure from the former president after his examination into another political adversary - the New York official - did not succeed to file indictments.

Legal Setting

The former director appeared in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was supported by his partner, Mrs Failor and offspring his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the court state his legal protections and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the accusations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's first administration as national leader. At the moment, the director was leading an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, the director caused a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just days before the national vote that he was examining political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert the former director provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he deceived the Senate by stating he had not permitted a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and delay" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media Mr Comey published to his Instagram after he was charged, he said he was innocent and alleged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"Our household have known for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to the former president," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a trial."

These allegations against the former director came after Donald Trump posted on online platforms demanding his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and others.
