Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators

The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“It was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
  • Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a streaming series that explored his role in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing initiative to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their status or wealth.
