California Sober: Research Indicates Marijuana Could Help Reducing Alcohol Consumption

Emerging scientific investigation released in the prestigious psychiatry journal suggests that embracing a sober lifestyle involving cannabis approach could significantly assist people reduce their drink consumption.

The Study and Controlled Environment Setting

Researchers from Brown University carried out a unique experiment where participants were provided with marijuana joints to smoke before entering a carefully constructed simulated bar environment.

  • Participants had the option to consume up to eight mini alcoholic beverages.
  • The experiment was conducted three separate times with varying THC levels: 7.2%, moderate potency, and a 0.03% cannabis.

Great care was taken to replicate a real-life bar atmosphere, complete with dim lighting and drinks on tap to guarantee subject authenticity.

“We wanted to ensure that when presented with the chance, you would be really driven to consume alcohol,” stated the principal investigator.

Outcomes revealed a notable decrease in alcohol consumption after participants used cannabis:

  • Alcohol consumption dropped by nineteen percent after consuming moderate-THC cannabis.
  • The drop was more pronounced with 7.2% THC marijuana, leading to a twenty-seven percent reduction versus the placebo.

Wider Trends and Future Research

Increased legal access has spurred a major surge in cannabis usage, which has doubled over the past decade.

At the same time, drink consumption is at a historic low, with numerous individuals opting for substitutes like weed.

Crucial to note that forty percent of trial subjects met the criteria for alcohol dependence.

Although cannabis might be a possible solution to heavy alcohol use, researchers warn that more study is required.

“It is premature to tell people in treatment for drinking problems, ‘Go ahead and substitute marijuana, and it will work out for you,’” a study author commented.
