Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
