Accused Harasser Questioned: 'But Suppose I Might Be Madeleine?'
A individual indicted with stalking Kate McCann apparently recorded her a phone message which asked: "what if I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, twenty-four, who a jury heard has consistently declared she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial accused with harassing Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February this year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court was told communication data and information retrieved from phones logged Ms Wandelt repeatedly demanding Madeleine's mother for a genetic test during that period.
Madeleine's vanishing in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a vacation in Portugal - is among the most widely reported child disappearance cases and continues to be open.
'I Don't Want Money'
Another voicemail, shared in court, documented Ms Wandelt stating: "I realize I'm heavy and unattractive like Madeleine was, but I feel what I know."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's recording expressed: "Imagine there is a small chance that I am she? What then? Wouldn't that be important for you?"
"I don't want money, I possess a existence here in Poland, I only wish to know," the recording stated.
The panel was advised that by means of electronic messages, SMS messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a biological test, sent childhood photos to her phone in a effort to show a resemblance to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and claimed to have "recollections" from a youth with the McCanns.
The investigator, an intelligence analyst with Leicestershire Police who collated the information, informed the court there "didn't appear to be any answers" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt additionally contacted close associates of the McCanns, based on the phone records.
On October 9th, 2024, Gerry McCann picked up a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "incorrect contact information."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt recorded a recording on Mrs McCann's answerphone stating "I will continue and I intend to demonstrate my position."
The court learned the co-defendant established a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt prior to joining her on a visit to the McCanns' home in that area in last December.
Phone records revealed Mrs Spragg had communicated via WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to state the news outlets had characterized Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she should be taken seriously in the months before the appearance to Rothley, the county, in last December.
The court heard communications between the two accused, in that autumn, considering attempting to acquire Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her trash or from silverware at a eating establishment.
"We have to take action," Mrs Spragg told Ms Wandelt.
On the evening of the visit to their house, the defendant dispatched a text which said: "We find ourselves sat outside the McCanns' home with our lights out resembling detectives. I had hoped to do this with Peter Andrew I never thought I would be involved in this with the McCanns."
The trial proceeds.
