2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are anything but new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. Yet, their popularity has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming seems particularly pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year so far.

When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
